#IGrowYourFood is about hearing stories from organic and agroecological farmers, sharing their work, learning the challenges they face and understanding how we can support them. Join us on September 9 2021 to celebrate the farmers who grow your food.
Inspired by the principles of organic agriculture from IFOAM - Organics International, #IGrowYourFood was originally planned in 2019 to showcase the stories of organic farmers worldwide.
The idea received an overwhelming response from farmers in different countries, like-minded organisations as well as advocates for sustainable food systems. On a dedicated day, they all met in social media to like, share and comment on stories shared by the men and women who grow our food.
Now #IGrowYourFood has evolved into a Global Action Day where farmers and sustainable food and farming advocates make their voices heard and address you, policymakers and anyone interested in showing how organic farming can make a different and be a pathway to sustainable food systems.
It occurs on a dedicated day in Organic September on social media with videos, articles and/or photo stories, usually preceded by a set of informative webinars and a toolkit to help everyone share more content during the action day.
Everyone can participate in #IGrowYourFood. This is primarily about hearing from the farmers who grow our food sustainable and everyone who champions sustainable food and farming systems.
There are many ways for you to get involved in the #IGrowYourFood action day. Whether you are a farmer, a like-minded organisation, a policymaker or food enthusiast, we can all join!
There are many things connecting people the world over. Food is one of them. We all have to eat! But what about those who grow our food. How much do we know about the challenges they face and understand the work that goes into producing what we consume?
The FAO estimates that the hidden environmental cost of world food production totals around USD 2.1 trillion annually. Understanding how our food systems work and how they influence farmers’ livelihoods can positively impact our day-to-day decision and have a rippling effect on our communities, our society and the policies shaping our food and farming systems.
By highlighting the work of sustainable, organic farmers, #IGrowYourFood highlights how the food choices we make can impact farmer livelihoods, natural resources, wildlife and how we can tackle the climate crisis.
#IGrowYourFood works both ways. We support farmers in making their voices heard, triggering meaningful change, and it gives you and policymakers real-life arguments to help make decisions that matter.
